Rúben Amorim will be pleased with Bryan Mbeumo’s comments following Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Michael Carrick’s second stint as Manchester United head coach has gone as well as he could’ve imagined. It began with a brilliant win in the Manchester derby, before another excellent showing against Arsenal away from home and good wins against Fulham and Spurs at home.
Bryan Mbeumo returned to action for Carrick’s first game, following his AFCON campaign, and started as the sole centre-forward. Amad moved to the right, and Patrick Dorgu played on the left, with Matheus Cunha moving into that role later on.
This continued until the Spurs game, when Mbeumo moved back to the left wing to start the game, with Cunha playing up front. After the red card, though, the Cameroon international returned to his natural role until Benjamin Šeško came on in the second half.
Mbeumo has shone under Carrick with three goals in four games, including an excellently worked set-piece goal, courtesy of Jonny Evans, against Spurs.
Despite his form under Carrick, Mbeumo has recently spoken highly of Rúben Amorim – even referencing him as a reason behind the current good run of form.
Mbeumo reveals Amorim’s impact
Mbeumo’s return to action was crucial behind United’s wins against City and Arsenal. Amorim had to end his United tenure without Amad, Mbeumo or Noussair Mazraoui due to AFCON.
As cited by The Mirror, Mbeumo spoke on United’s impressive form since Carrick took over. “I just feel we built on what we were doing from the start because I don’t think it was that bad as a lot of people felt,” said Mbeumo.
“We just work together, make the effort together, with a big mentality, and we’re never beaten. Even if someone gets past, we come back to support and just try to give it our all.”
Despite his high words for Amorim, Mbeumo is a fan of the current coaching setup. “It was Jonny Evans who was coming to me and the guys and we just tried to hit it. We did it once but it didn’t work out. But this one was the most important,” he said.
Mbeumo’s credit for Evans proves he is happy under the current coaching staff, and why wouldn’t he be? He has been among United’s best players since they took over.
Mbeumo must stay through the middle
Many thought Šeško was unlucky to be dropped for Carrick’s first game in charge, following his three goals in two games under Darren Fletcher, but not many can argue it was the wrong call now.
Mbeumo has already proven he can link play, make runs in behind, win aerial duels, and hold up the ball for others when playing through the middle – qualities that have been lacking at Old Trafford for a seriously long time.

But he isn’t the reason he must continue through the middle – it’s Amad. If Mbeumo returned to the right flank, Amad would be without a position in the side, but he, too, has been among United’s best players under Carrick.
Without Amad, United would’ve struggled to break down the opposition’s blocks, but he can simply turn it on and beat his full-back with ease, before putting a cross into the box or getting a shot off.
He has to play on the right, so Mbeumo has to play through the middle.
