Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has made his feelings clear about the rumours linking his star player Matheus Cunha to Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window.
Manchester United are looking to bolster their frontline this summer following a dismal season, particularly from their players in the frontline.
Matheus Cunha is one of their priority targets to solve that issue. The Wolves star has 15 goals and five assists in 29 Premier League outings so far this season.
They are planning to sign him, alongside a new centre-forward, to help improve Ruben Amorim’s options in the attack at Old Trafford and are wasting no time in pushing for a deal.
Reports have revealed that United have already had positive talks with Cunha’s representatives and that they are planning to trigger his £62.5 million release clause in the coming weeks.
The Brazilian international is also said to be keen on the move, with the desire to be an important part of the rebuild under Amorim.
Pereira breaks silence on Cunha transfer speculation
Thankfully for Wolves, all of this noise surrounding their star man hasn’t come when their Premier League status was uncertain.
With their safety all but secure for the 2025/26 campaign, Wolves are simply focused on ending the season well under new boss Vitor Pereira.
They beat United last week and hope to continue their positive form, and Pereira is not willing to allow the rumours surrounding Cunha to impact him.
In fact, the 56-year-old says that he “doesn’t care” about the media noise and that Cunha is “committed” to ending the season well with Wolves.
“He’s committed,” Pereira said. “He’s our player and he’s committed, that’s all. He has the mentality to help the team. It’s normal that [Cunha is mentioned] every time on the news, but this is not for me. I don’t care about the news.”
Why Amorim wants Cunha at United
There are three key reasons why United are bringing Cunha from Wolves to bolster Amorim’s side this summer.
In recent years, United have tended to sign players without Premier League experience, often leading to slow starts as new arrivals adapt to the demands of English football.
This adjustment period has put added pressure on both players and the team. Cunha, however, is already well-versed in the Premier League, having spent two and a half seasons impressing with Wolves.
Secondly, Cunha naturally operates as a left-sided attacking midfielder — the very role he has excelled in at Molineux. This familiarity means he should slot seamlessly into Amorim’s system without the need for significant tactical adaptation.
Finally, Cunha arrives with the kind of experience that suggests he can make an instant impact. At a similar age to Bruno Fernandes when he signed, Cunha is seen as someone who can raise the overall level of those around him, just as the Portuguese midfielder did when he transformed United’s midfield.
United’s strategy of combining an experienced, Premier League-proven signing like Cunha with emerging talents such as Liam Delap looks a smart one — and it could be exactly what Amorim’s squad needs to kick on next season.
