‘I could cry…’ Peter Schmeichel blasts Manchester United for “sad” performance in front of Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel has blasted his former side for their performance against Liverpool on Sunday.
Sitting next to legendary ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for the game, Schmeichel stated he could “nearly cry,” as a result of United’s performance in front of their former manager.
Despite Erik ten Hag fielding a strong starting lineup, United went on to lose 3-0 to their fierce rivals, with individual errors at the heart of an overall poor team performance.
Both Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo would make errors leading to Liverpool scoring, whilst new signing Joshua Zirkzee missed two big chances.
Discussing United’s performance against the Merseyside outfit, Schmeichel refused to hold back as he highlighted the depressive nature of the Red Devils’ performance.
“I’ve sat with Sir Alex [Ferguson] today, it’s really sad. I mean what he did for this football club everything we enjoyed, the three of us,” Schmeichel said to his Optus Sport co-hosts Michael Owen and Paul Scholes.
“Everything that we enjoyed, the great times, everything… and to sit with him, and he’s watching this, that for me is really really sad, it is.
“He did something really extraordinary with this football club, and all of that is not there anymore. The club changed. Then you have somebody coming in, running the club, they’ve supported the manager, they’ve given him money.
“Now, we’ve played three games. We’ve lost two. I don’t see the difference, I mean I could nearly cry because I want this team to do really really well.”
Erik ten Hag’s side now find themselves in fourteenth place heading into the international break, with Premier League fixtures against Southampton and Tottenham still to come this month.
Additionally in September, United will make their EFL Cup and Europa League debuts for this season against Barnsley and FC Twente respectively.
