One of Manchester United’s midfield targets has addressed reports that linked him to the Red Devils over the summer window.
It was reported throughout the summer transfer window that Manchester United could target a new midfielder to help improve their depth, however, no midfielder was signed.
With the summer transfer window closing on Monday, it meant that Ruben Amorim’s business concluded with a total of four new additions, including three attackers and one goalkeeper.
The three attackers were Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who signed for a combined fee in the region of £200 million, whilst the goalkeeping addition was Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens.
As for midfielders, the Reds were linked with a host of names, including Carlos Baleba, Conor Gallagher, Angelo Stiller, and Morten Hjulmand. It is the latter who has spoken out against these rumours.
Hjulmand deflects transfer rumours
Hjulmand, who currently captains Amorim’s former side Sporting CP, has been linked with a move away from his side for the past couple of campaigns, including rumours linking him with United.
When speaking at the Denmark national team’s training camp, the midfielder addressed the rumours and dismissed any chance of his departure.
He said, via Ojogo, “They’re talking about rumours, but I don’t identify with them. I identify with the fact that I should start [preseason] at Sporting and get back in shape after the holidays.
“We had some very good games, in which we played at a good level, even though we lost at the weekend in a derby against FC Porto. We’re not in first place right now, and we want to get back there.
“That’s what I can conclude from the last few weeks. I don’t want to say if I had to deal with anything specific.”
Amorim’s midfield headache
Now that it is confirmed that United have brought in no additional midfield depth for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, many questions will remain as to whether their current depth is enough to compete.
After the Reds’ first pre-season game in July, Amorim said, via UtdDistrict, “The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball.”

Amorim has been handed the unfortunate headache of having multiple quality midfielders, but none of whom fit his system. Bruno Fernandes has had to move to a deeper role, which has subsequently pushed Kobbie Mainoo out of the starting XI.
Hopefully for the Red Devils, their Portuguese tactician is able to figure his midfield conundrum out in the coming months without the need for any reinforcement.
