“I am very worried” – Gary Neville makes “stupid” claim after Rúben Amorim’s Mason Mount decision

Rúben Amorim has made a “stupid” Mason Mount decision, says Gary Neville, after his treatment in the Brentford loss.

Manchester United found themselves on the losing side yet again this season, as Rúben Amorim’s side were embarrassed by Brentford away from home.

Despite Benjamin Šeško’s first goal since joining from RB Leipzig, United finished the game as eventual 3-1 losers, with the whole side failing to impress.

Altay Bayindir appeared to be a shining light in an otherwise dismal showing, but his mistake for the third goal is unforgivable and could result in Senne Lammens’ first start since his Deadline Day move.

When chasing the game late on, Amorim brought on Mason Mount and played the former Chelsea player as a left-wing-back. While Mount is versatile, playing him on the left side of defence is a serious waste of his talent.

Neville declares Amorim as “stupid”

Speaking to NBC after United’s loss, Gary Neville commented on Amorim’s odd decision to play Mount in defence, as well as the team’s overall poor performance.

“I am very worried, there is no point in me sitting here and saying I’m not,” said the treble-winning right-back. “The levels of performance, the results and the substitutions yesterday. I saw something at the end of the Grimsby game that they lost in the Carabao Cup a couple of weeks ago, which was Mason Mount ending up at left wing-back.

“We admire managers who are stubborn and resilient around their system, we want them to stick to their plan, but when you have Mason Mount playing at left-back you are going to look pretty stupid.

“It has happened twice now and it can’t happen. The first time I thought it was unforgivable and yesterday it happened again.”

Neville continued to say: “He changes his back three and his back five every single game and the performances and the results are just unacceptable.

“I’m really, really worried. I would never go on television as I know how difficult a manager’s job can be and say a manager should be sacked, but I suspect the hierarchy at Manchester United are going to want to see a turnaround.”

Cunha and Mbeumo have ended Mount’s United career

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are two brilliant United signings, but were they both needed?

Cunha has taken Bruno Fernandes’ position as the left attacking midfielder, while Mbeumo has forced Amad back to wing-back. Kobbie Mainoo has also been left without a place due to the new additions.

Mount – unlike Fernandes and Mainoo – has never been a regular starter at Old Trafford, but could’ve been if Amorim didn’t sign the two Premier League forwards. He is now the third-choice left-sided attacking midfielder and the occasional left-wing-back option.

The individual recruitment was good, but together the signings don’t make sense, especially when United are so desperately crying out for a central midfielder.
