“Huge gamble…” – Ruben Amorim told to avoid signing £100,000-a-week star despite Man Utd being approached

Ruben Amorim has been told to avoid making one signing at Manchester United this summer despite the club being approached for a deal.

Manchester United are preparing to overhaul their attacking options this summer following a disappointing 2024/25 season, which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and struggle for goals throughout the campaign.

Bruno Fernandes was the team’s top scorer with 19 goals, while Alejandro Garnacho and Amad followed with 11 each. Rasmus Højlund added 10, but no other player managed to reach double figures in all competitions.

The club has already secured the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, two wingers expected to bolster the forward line, but the search for a central striker remains a priority.

With Viktor Gyökeres heading to Arsenal and Liam Delap now at Chelsea, the pool of available options is narrowing. However, several centre-forwards are still under consideration as United look to complete their attacking rebuild.

Amorim told to avoid signing star despite United being approached

There are plenty of strikers being considered at Old Trafford this summer and links have been made with ex-Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 28-year-old, who earned around £100,000-a-week at Goodison Park is among a group of experienced strikers who have been offered to United this summer. He is alongside Jamie Vardy and Callum Wilson in that list.

However, Emile Heskey has advised Amorim’s side against a move for Calvert-Lewin even if he was to only come in as a backup striker.

“I don’t see it being a sensible signing, Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Manchester United, if I’m honest with you. Whether he’s a backup or not, I can’t make sense of that signing,” the former England international said.

“Don’t get me wrong, when he’s fit, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been fantastic for Everton in his time there, but he’s spent so long on the sidelines at different points that signing him would be a huge gamble. I don’t think that’s what United can afford right now.”

Calvert-Lewin not the right option

Most United fans would have the same opinion as Hesky, with Calvert-Lewin being a significant change from links to Victor Osimhen and Gyokeres.

The Reds might not secure a world-class name in that position after spending big on Cunha and Mbeumo but they need someone who can at least bring consistency alongside their experience.

Calvert-Lewin has the latter but has been unable to provide consistent performances in the Premier League for a long time and his injuries are also a concern, as Hesky pointed out.

Those free agents are unlikely to be players United truly look at unless they are still without a striker in the final days of the transfer window.
