Manchester United kick off 2025 with one of their toughest tests of the season against rivals and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Liverpool are thriving at the top of the Premier League table under new manager Arne Slot, with just one defeat in all competitions this season.

Meanwhile, United are struggling in 14th place, only seven points clear of the relegation zone, as the team are attempting to adapt to the demands of new boss Ruben Amorim.

That has proven more difficult than expected, with five defeats in their last six Premier League games, including disappointing home defeats to Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Amorim’s side have got to view this game as one where they have nothing to lose. An upset could really uplift the mood at Old Trafford.

Kick-off time and venue

United will be playing on Sunday, 5 January against their rivals, with the game kicking off at 16:30 GMT, the later kick-off time.

It was going to be a tough test no matter what and becomes even more difficult since the Reds are travelling to Anfield.

United have not won away at Liverpool since the 2015/16 campaign, with five losses and four draws since a 1-0 win in January 2016.

TV channel and livestreams

In the United Kingdom, this game will be available to watch live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football, while Radio coverage will be available on BBC Radio 5 Live.

International coverage and livestreams can also be found here.

The UtdDistrict X account will also cover the fixture, providing quotes from Amorim and the players before and after the match.

Latest team news

Amorim will have both Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes available for selection after the pair served one-game suspensions for the Newcastle game.

Players like Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelöf remain out of action through recent injury setbacks.

Otherwise, the Reds have a fully fit squad and, for the first time since Amorim’s arrival, they have a full week of training going into the game.

Liverpool will be without Joe Gomez after Slot confirmed the defender suffered a hamstring issue in their latest game.

It is likely that Ibrahima Konaté comes back into the team after struggling with his own injury troubles in recent weeks.
