Manchester United are reportedly set to hold fresh talks over a new contract for midfield star Kobbie Mainoo in the coming months.
Kobbie Mainoo has seen a sudden resurgence at Manchester United following the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Having made his Premier League debut under Erik ten Hag toward the back end of 2023, the young midfielder burst onto the domestic and international scene, becoming one of England’s youngest-ever starting players in an international tournament final during the 2024 European Championships.
But, following the Dutchman’s dismissal and Rúben Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford, Mainoo fell out of the pecking order and did not start a single league game until the latter was fired earlier this year.
However, following his brilliant 90-minute display in the 2-0 win over Manchester City on the weekend, he has been informed that he is once again central to the club’s plans.
Mainoo set for new United contract talks
According to Sky Sports, United are now set to hold sit-down talks with Mainoo’s representatives about a new contract and have already made initial contact.
Mainoo is on around £20,000-a-week, one of United’s lowest-paid senior players, and the club want to bring him more in line with the rest of his teammates and reflect his importance to the club.
While he was not initially part of Amorim’s long-term plans at the club, United still see Mainoo as absolutely key to their future, and wants him to commit to a new deal before his current one expires in 18 months.
“Manchester United now feel that this is the right time, while they are putting their house in order, they want to tie down some of their younger players who are important to the club’s future,” Sky’s Rob Dorsett explained. “Mainoo is at the heart of it.”
How much would Mainoo earn at United?
Mainoo’s contract situation is not a new exploration for United. Last season, when his contract was about to run out, the club sat down for talks, although his diminished role under Amorim left the player unsure about signing a new long-term deal without guarantees of game time.
This was around the same time that star winger Amad signed a new five-year deal worth around £120,000 a week, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that United wanted to tie Mainoo down to similar terms.
It was reported at the time that the Reds were willing to pursue a deal worth around £150,000 a week with Mainoo, although a final agreement was never reached.
But with new life seemingly injected into Mainoo’s story at United, it’s unlikely contract talks would stall in a similar manner to last year.
