How Chido Obi-Martin fared on Man United U18 debut after making ‘dreams’ claim
Chido Obi-Martin made his debut for Manchester United’s under-18s side this weekend after making a ‘dreams’ claim.
Chido Obi Martin, a highly promising 16-year-old attacking talent, joined United from Arsenal’s academy last month.
At just 15 years of age, the Danish teenager made his debut for Arsenal’s Under-21 side and was even called up to train with Mikel Arteta’s first team during the 2023/24 season.
Obi Martin showcased his goal-scoring abilities in the U18 Premier League last season, where he netted 32 times.
It has been reported that Obi-Martin could be fast-tracked into first-team action sooner than expected – but he needed to settle into life in the Academy beforehand and has waiting for his debut in recent weeks.
After having an interrupted summer due to the long process of his move, Obi-Martin needed time to get to full fitness before eventually making his debut for United’s under-18s this weekend.
How Chido Obi-Martin fared on Man Utd U18s debut
Adam Lawrence’s side wanted to continue their perfect form in the U18 Premier League after winning their first five games. Obi-Martin started the game on the bench.
The clash against Sunderland’s youth team began well, with two goals from Bendito Mantato giving them a 2-0 lead early on but they conceded just before the half-time whistle.
A goal from Reece Munro minutes after the restart restored United’s two-goal lead. However, Sunderland quickly responded with two goals to make the game level at 3-3 going into the final 30 minutes.
Obi-Martin was introduced for his debut after 63 minutes, coming on for Victor Musa, and would have been eager to find the winner for his team.
Yet, it was another exciting talent who found the opening in the 86th minute. Fellow substitute Jim Thwaites scored an excellent goal to continue United’s perfect start to the league campaign.
The 4-3 win was Obi-Martin’s first taste of United action, and while he would have definitely liked to score himself, it is poetic that a dramatic late winner came on his debut.
Obi-Martin focused on ‘achieving dreams’ at Man Utd
Obi-Martin will look to find consistency in the youth teams in the coming months as he eyes progression through the ranks at Carrington.
He has already showed how sharp he looks in training sessions and will be aiming to make Erik ten Hag pay attention to him through scoring in the youth teams.
His ambition is clear and the teenager made his plan clear once his United deal was over the line.
“Very happy to sign with this amazing club,” Obi-Martin wrote on Instagram. “Time to focus and achieve all my dreams. Thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far.”
Fans will be excited to see how the young attacking talent settles into life at United. He will be glad to have finally made the first big step by making his debut.
