Manchester United have received a stern warning from a club president about one of the transfer targets ahead of the summer window.
Manchester United’s recruitment team is focused on strengthening Ruben Amorim’s squad for the upcoming season by targeting youthful, energetic talents.
While experienced players like Matheus Cunha—who is expected to arrive with a proven pedigree at the top level—remain part of the plan, the club is also prioritising the acquisition of promising young prospects with high developmental potential.
This strategic shift is reflected in recent signings such as Sekou Kone, Chido Obi, and Ayden Heaven, signalling a move away from the club’s former emphasis on older, high-wage players.
Among the most exciting young talents linked with United is Franco Mastantuono, a 17-year-old Argentine prodigy currently playing for River Plate. Already a first-team regular, Mastantuono has appeared in several key matches in recent months.
With a £38 million release clause becoming active this summer, United are one of several top European clubs showing strong interest in securing the youngster’s services.
United receive stern warning from River Plate president
Various reports have stated that United are at the front of the queue to sign Mastantuono in the summer. He would provide important depth in the frontline at Old Trafford.
However, it is clear that River Plate do not want to lose their prized asset so early on in his career and some reports have claimed they want him to sign new contract terms to erase the release clause in his deal.
River Plate president Jorge Pablo Brito has made his feelings clear on the situation and sent a warning to interested clubs like United, saying that the winger should continue his development in Argentina.
“The important thing is to remain calm with Mastantuono, understanding that he’s 17 years old. He’s not in a hurry, nor is River Plate,” he told ESPN, as per Sport Witness.
“The best thing to do when something is in full swing is to let it continue to grow and not touch anything. You have to be very careful and not put more pressure on him than he already has.”
United need direct threats in frontline
Even with the potential signings of Liam Delap and Cunha, the Reds are still in desperate need of attacking reinforcements.
Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are all expected to leave the club and despite having different options in those two no.10 positions, Alejandro Garnacho is the only real direct threat at the club.

United need to have more players who can inject fear into the opponents when the ball is at their feet. Mastantuono seems to be able to do that despite his age.
Although, the club also need to identify other targets in those positions as a deal for Mastantuono could end up being difficult to complete.
