“He showed personality” – Erik ten Hag sings praise of criticised Man United star after Burnley win
Erik ten Hag has shown support to Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana after he bounced back from his mistake against Bayern Munich.
The United goalkeeper was frustrated with himself after letting Leroy Sane’s opener go underneath him and blamed himself for the loss.
However, Ten Hag explained that there were different reasons behind that goal other than Onana’s mistake and has since praised the goalkeeper’s ‘personality’ after a strong performance against Burnley.
The 1-0 win was anything but convincing and Onana contributed well with some important saves throughout the match.
“He really showed personality,” said Ten Hag of his goalkeeper after the game. “He was really calm and composed. He did everything right in and out of possession and leads his back line. I thought it was a very good performance.”
The Reds are still not in the position for Onana to utilise his ball-playing abilities consistently. The midfield pivot of Scott McTominay and Casemiro completed 56 passes between them in the game – around half of what the likes of Manchester City’s Rodri complete on his own per match.
However, with Sofyan Amrabat coming in and making his debut and the return of super-talent Kobbie Mainoo closing in, Ten Hag’s men will be in a better position to do something about that soon.
Onana’s personality has already been something that has rubbed off on United supporters, who appreciated the Cameroon ‘keeper opting to speak post-match in Germany and take responsibility for his mistake.
Onana’s shot-stopping abilities have been questioned since he came to the club but that display at Turf Moor will give him confidence going forward.
