Jason Wilcox has revealed the three main reasons Manchester United have signed Matheus Cunha as his £62.5 million transfer is officially unveiled.
Manchester United have confirmed they have finalised the signing of Matheus Cunha in a deal valued at £62.5 million.
The Brazilian forward has become Rúben Amorim’s first addition of the summer and a key figure in United’s efforts to reshape their squad early in the window, having put pen to paper on a five-year contract.
Cunha is viewed as a major improvement to an attacking line that has struggled for goals and rhythm. His pace, sharp movement, and ability to play across the front three are expected to bring added variety and fluidity to United’s attacking play.
The £62.5 million fee will be paid in three instalments, starting with an initial £20.8 million once the deal is completed, followed by two further payments over the next year.
At 26, Cunha is expected to occupy the left side of United’s attack, overtaking Alejandro Garnacho in the starting lineup. The Argentine’s departure is looking increasingly likely, with growing interest from clubs both in the Premier League and on the continent.
Cunha opens up on securing United transfer
Cunha is joining United as a boyhood fan and has spoken to club media for the first time as he opens up on completing his move to Old Trafford.
“It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player,” Cunha said.
“Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team, and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality.
“I can’t wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my team-mates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.”
Wilcox explains three reasons United signed Cunha
Speaking alongside Cunha, United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, explained that Cunha’s experience in the Premier League, across Europe, and his dynamic style of play were major factors in their decision to commit £62.5 million to the deal.
“Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window,” Wilcox detailed.
“He has proved his ability to succeed in the Premier League as one of the most exciting and productive forwards in England during his time at Wolves, and, before that, in Spain and Germany.
“He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.”
