Harry Maguire names two Manchester United stars who can follow in his footsteps after Arsenal win
Harry Maguire has sent a message to two Manchester United stars who he feels can follow in his footsteps following hard times at Old Trafford.
Harry Maguire is the epitome of “hard times never last” at Manchester United following his five and half seasons at the club.
Maguire was signed in 2019 for a world-record fee for a defender, with Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s United paying Leicester City £80 million for his services.
Although he was made club captain shortly after, inconsistent form left fans willing him to be sold, and this was almost done so when the club agreed a £30 million fee with West Ham United after he was stripped of the armband, with Bruno Fernandes taking hold.
However, since then, the English defender has slowly been working his way back to his peak form, and since Rúben Amorim’s arrival, he has been praised tremendously for his performances in United’s back three.
Maguire issues advice to two United stars
Against Arsenal, Maguire played 104 minutes despite not training for two days ahead of the game due to illness.
He was substituted for young centre-back Leny Yoro and came off the field to a standing ovation before United eventually defeated the North London club through penalties.
Altay Bayındır was the hero on the night, saving one in normal time and then another in the shootout, while striker Joshua Zirkzee buried the winning penalty that send Amorim’s men through to the FA Cup fourth round.
Both Zirkzee and Bayındır have endured tough struggles during their time at the club so far, but Maguire has issued a message of support for both players.
“I’ve had a time for this club where things are tough, and everyone seems to come against you, but one thing’s for sure is that the United fans stick with you,” Maguire said. “When times were tough, they stuck with me.
“When you play for this club the lows are really low and the highs are really high. You’ve got to try and maintain yourself. There’s going to be games where you play bad, those games when you play bad everyone jumps on you.
“But those games when you play well you become the best player in your position in the world, so you’ve got to stay grounded, level-headed, but Altay was brilliant, he made some big saves at some crucial moments.
“That game against Newcastle Josh was the unfortunate one to get subbed off, you could have subbed any of the 11 players off at that moment in time and they would have all got booed, because we all deserved to get booed because we were awful in the first 30 minutes.
“It had nothing to do really with Josh, he probably knows that and he probably felt it at the time, even though it was disappointing for him. It’s a great ending today that he scores that winning penalty and the lads had full faith in him that he does.”
