In Sheffield Wednesday’s 3-2 loss vs Preston North End, Harry Amass showed Rúben Amorim exactly what he wanted to see.
Harry Amass was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday during the summer transfer window, following the news that he wouldn’t spend pre-season with Rúben Amorim’s senior side, despite seven matches for the Manchester United manager last season.
Diego Leon took Amass’ place as Patrick Dorgu’s left-wing-back understudy after his transfer from Paraguay. Leon has been included on the United bench, but has spent the majority of his Old Trafford tenure with Travis Binnion’s under-21s as he settles into life in Manchester.
While Leon has only just begun to showcase his true form, Amass has been shining all season in the Championship, despite playing for a side that has gone through administration and serious transfer regulations.
Luckily for Amorim and United, Amass has been a key player for Wednesday, playing as a left-wing-back in a defensive five. His experience in this position will help him massively when he returns to Old Trafford in the summer.
Amass impresses against Preston
With Wednesday sitting in 24th position with less than 0 points, due to their 12-point deduction, a win against Preston North End was crucial for Henrik Pedersen’s side. While they didn’t take all three points, Amass showcased his class with an assist for a former United player, Charlie McNeill.
Amass started as the left-wing-back and, after just two minutes, he made a brilliant run before setting up the Carrington graduate to take an early lead.
United’s loanee started on the touchline, with the player in possession just behind him. He acted as if he was meandering into the stands before making a run in between the full-back and centre-back. Amass just beat the defender to the ball and quickly knocked it just in front of him.
While McNeill waited patiently on the edge of the box, Amass looked up and managed to pull it back to the 22-year-old attacker. The pair were also involved in the second goal, as McNeill headed home from a Liam Palmer cross, following good play from the United loanee.
Amorim will be delighted to see Amass’ form in the Championship, and will be even happier with his performance on Saturday. The play before the first goal is exactly what the United manager will want to see, especially while Patrick Dorgu is struggling for form.
Could Amass return in January?
Amass’ initial loan deal was only for six months – a sensible decision given the ownership situation at Wednesday – but he has become a key player for the club, with 14 starts in 14 Championship appearances under Henrik Pedersen.

It now appears that the former Watford youngster will stay in Sheffield until the end of the season, but he could be a key player under Amorim for the rest of the campaign.
Dorgu has struggled for consistency for the entire season, Diogo Dalot has been poor on the left side, and Luke Shaw appears to be more of a central defender in Amorim’s formation.
Amass could provide real competition for Dorgu and allow Dalot to return to the right side, something he will have to do during the African Cup of Nations anyway, in the absence of Amad and Noussair Mazraoui.
