Brentford have broken their silence on Bryan Mbeumo amid talks with Manchester United surrounding a Premier League transfer for the player this summer.
Manchester United are still in negotiations over what is set to be their second signing of the summer, with a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo edging closer.
After securing Matheus Cunha earlier this month, Rúben Amorim is looking to further reinforce his attack, though discussions with Brentford have been slow to progress.
United’s opening offer of £55 million was rejected in early June, and a second bid of £55 million and a further £7.5 million in add-ons has also been turned down.
Despite the hold-up, there is growing belief that a deal will eventually be agreed. Once Mbeumo arrives at Old Trafford, United will look to accelerate player departures and step up their pursuit of both a striker and a midfielder ahead of the Premier League’s mid-August start.
Brentford break silence on Mbeumo transfer
Despite Mbeumo’s preference to join United and the two clubs being close to a full agreement, Brentford’s sporting director, Phil Giles, has explained that there is still a distinct possibility the 25-year-old could remain in London.
“There’s significant interest in Bryan,” Giles officially stated to Sky Sports. “I think it’s been documented and publicised about his current preference.
“From what I understand, he’s also, if need be, happy to stay at Bredford next year as well. So listen, let’s see on that. I think our position is [that] he had an unbelievable season last year. We expect there’s an interest in him. If that deal’s right, there’s a deal to do. If it’s not, then he’ll stay.”
Asked further if there have been conversations surrounding whether he could stay at the club, Giles said: “Yeah. We’ve spoken to Bryan, his representatives, and it’s not a given that he’s going to depart this summer. There is interest.
“You know, he had a great season last season, so it’s inevitable there will be interest in him. If we get the right offer, then, you know, there’s potentially a deal to be done, but there’s only so much we can say right now on that.”
Third bid for Mbeumo is imminent
Although Brentford turned down United’s second offer for the Cameroon international, reports indicate they are satisfied with a base fee of £55 million.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United’s third bid will focus on improved payment terms, as Brentford are pushing for a larger portion of the fee to be paid upfront.
Brentford reportedly want the total deal to reach £65 million, slightly above United’s previous £62.5 million proposal, as they value Mbeumo higher than Cunha.
United are keen to finalise the signing of the 25-year-old before pre-season training begins next week, with a revised third offer expected early this week and his medical tentatively scheduled a few days later.
