The Ghana FA have released a statement on Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as they look to convince him to change his England allegiances.

Mainoo, 18, scored a stunning solo goal on Thursday night to secure United three points against Wolves in the last minute of the game.

The teenage midfielder has emerged as one of Erik ten Hag’s most important players this season after returning from an injury he sustained during pre-season.

Now, after scoring in back-to-back games, Mainoo has attracted interest from the Ghana FA, who saw their international side get knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the group stages.

Manager Chris Hughton, formally of Brighton, was sacked afterwards and according to The Times, Ghana are searching for a talisman after their AFCON campaign was described as “disastrous”.

The aforementioned report also included a statement from Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of Ghana FA, on Mainoo and how they would ‘love’ to work with the United star.

“The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,” Abbey told The Times. “Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad.”

Their attempts of trying to persuade Mainoo to switch from England to Ghana would prove difficult, however. Despite Mainoo regularly visiting the homeland of his parents, Mainoo has represented England at U17, U18 and U19 levels.

Prior reports have also stated that Gareth Southgate is ‘desperate’ to see Mainoo commit his future to the Three Lions.
