Gary Neville explains why he’s stepped back from Sky’s Monday Night Football coverage
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville explains why he has chosen to step back from Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football segment.
Since Gary Neville retired from football in February 2011, he has become a staple fixture on the United Kingdom’s football TV screens.
The former Manchester United full-back has become a leading figure in the world of football punditry. He often appears on various Sky Sports football shows and has his own YouTube channel, The Overlap.

However, in recent months, fans have noticed that his appearances on the well-known Monday Night Football show on Sky Sports have become sparing, with usual co-host Jamie Carragher taking the reigns.
Carragher and Neville have formed a fantastic on-screen relationship over the last decade, but the former United star has been limiting his appearances on the channel recently.
Why Neville left Monday Night Football
Speaking on the Overlap US channel, Neville has now revealed that his step back from MNF is related to his analysis of set pieces.
“So tomorrow, I’m expected to do set-pieces, whereas with Sky, on Monday Night Football, there are some set pieces which I prepare for,” he told Rebecca Lowe on the It’s Called Soccer podcast.
“But now I don’t do Monday Night Football anymore. I don’t do set-pieces any more.”
Neville’s new ventures
Neville is starting to become much more prevalent on NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage in the USA. Currently, in a partnership between Sky and NBC, Neville will be available on NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage every Sunday of the 2024/25 season.
However, it’s reported by the Manchester Evening News that he will primarily do so through his live appearances for Sky Sports.
An agreement is also being finalised between the parties that he spends up to four weekends in NBC’s New York studio, including two times before Christmas.
