Paul Scholes blasts Man United star for being “guilty” of costly error vs Fenerbahce
Paul Scholes has blasted one of Manchester United’s key players for being guilty of a costly error against Fenerbahce on Thursday evening.
Manchester United’s Europa League campaign saw another draw as they were held to a 1-1 result against Fenerbahce.
Christian Eriksen gave United the edge in the first half, scoring a stunning goal from outside the box, marking his fourth of the season and sending Erik ten Hag‘s men into half-time with the lead.
But Fenerbahce responded swiftly in the second half, with Youssef En-Nesyri outmuscling Victor Lindelöf to head in from close range after an excellent cross from Allan Saint-Maximin.
Despite both teams pushing for a winner with late changes, neither could break the deadlock, and the points were shared after a fiercely contested evening in Istanbul.
Scholes’ big criticism
Analysing the game on TNT Sports after full-time, former United midfielder Paul Scholes chose to hone in on the Fenerbahce goal in the second half.
Before Saint-Maximin crossed the ball into the area, United right-back Diogo Dalot attempted to track back and defend against the winger, but allowed him to cut inside before he delivered the cross.
Scholes explained that he feels this is a mistake that Dalot allows wingers to do too often, especially knowing in that situation that the French winger wants to cross the ball.
“I think Dalot’s guilty of that quite a bit,” Scholes explained to his co-hosts.“You know exactly what Saint-Maximin is going to do in that situation.
“He [Dalot] needs to show more urgency, get out to him because you know they’ve got a dangerous player in the box.
“It’s a great ball in, and he’s not going to miss from there, but Dalot doesn’t do that enough.
“He’s been okay, one of the better players for United this season, but he needs to get that side of his game right. You have to stop that at source. Otherwise, they’re going to score because he’s a real threat.”
A positive from Scholes
However, Scholes wasn’t all doom and gloom. He continued, explaining that he felt although United’s position in the Europa Leauge, 21st in the 36-team league table, is terrible, the draws against FC Porto and Fenerbahce away from home aren’t bad results.
“The two results you have to say: Porto away, tough place to go, good draw. Fenerbahce away, good draw. It’s the home game that was really disappointing, the Twente game. You should be beating those teams.
“They’re in a terrible position in that Europa League. They’ve got to start winning games soon.”
