Gary Neville urges Erik ten Hag to stop two concerning Man United trends after Brighton defeat
Gary Neville has urged Erik ten Hag to stop two concerning Manchester United trends after the defeat against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United suffered a 2-1 loss against The Seagulls in their second Premier League game of the season.
The Reds controlled much of the first half, but Brighton managed to open the scoring through Danny Welbeck after 32 minutes.
Erik ten Hag’s side levelled the score in the second half with a goal from Amad Diallo and thought they had taken the lead through Alejandro Garnacho.
However, the goal was disallowed due to a bizarre offside call involving Joshua Zirkzee.
In the final minutes of the game, Brighton scored a winning goal, which raised serious concerns about United’s defence.
Two trends occurred during the opening two games of the season. Harry Maguire has been replaced by Matthijs de Ligt in the backline in both games.
Ten Hag has also adjusted the system, moving from two false-nines to using a more natural centre-forward in Zirkzee.
Gary Neville believes that he can not keep making these changes in games and that it would cost them if they try similar against Liverpool.
“I think next week is really important before the international break,” Neville began on his Sky Sports podcast.
“But I think [it’s important to] get a pattern of play, get the style of play, getting a team picked that he believes is his best and then going with it.
“You know, I get the fact that some have come late. Some have come late from transfers, and some have come late back from the Euros.
“But I think now, with another week inside them, they’ve got eight days before Liverpool. I think now is the time.
“Obviously, there will be a break after that, but I don’t think we can go into games thinking that you can change your back four part way through it, or you can change the system part way through it.
“That’s happened already twice. I don’t think a third time it works.”
