Danny Welbeck explained what it was like in the Manchester United academy whilst Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm.

Welbeck, 32, spent 16 years with The Reds before moving across to Arsenal in 2014. He currently plays for Brighton, who are currently sixth in the Premier League.

The English striker won the league title with United in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson, who regularly watched on as the forward developed his craft through the youth system.

Ferguson brought through countless amounts of talent through the academy during his 26-year-long spell at Old Trafford and it was not by coincidence.

In a recent interview with GOAL, Welbeck was shown a clip of the Scotsman speaking to him and his teammates at 12 years of age. The manager was explaining the importance of teamwork.

“Obviously growing up at United and being a United fan and obviously following the team, to be a part of the academy [was great] and I think Sir Alex created a winning culture,” said Welbeck after watching the video.

“You’re trying to get to the top, get to the first team, and so many world-class stars are there. You’ve got Sir Alex Ferguson, a top, top manager. It was amazing to grow up in that environment and to finally get into the first team and be a part of it was something special. Even there [in the video], you can see he’s with the young boys in the academy and he’s giving his words of wisdom.

“That’s something that you felt a part of Manchester United, even being so young in the academy. He was still there, watching the training session, and he’d come over and maybe have a word with you.”
