Gary Neville blasts 2/10 Manchester United man for costly error, Rúben Amorim’s gamble didn’t pay off
Rúben Amorim will regret one of his big gambles vs Tottenham Hotspur as Gary Neville fumes at one Manchester United player on Thursday evening.
Manchester United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage after a bonkers 4-3 loss against Tottenham Hotspur has seen Rúben Amorim‘s men return to Manchester empty-handed.
The first half saw United look good for the most part, but they initially struggled with the home side’s intensity, and Dominic Solanke pounced on a poor save from Altay Bayındır to give Tottenham a lead.
United continued to push, but just moments in the second half, Ange Postecoglou’s side went 2-0 up as Dejan Kulusevski put their second of the night past Bayındır.
Solanke then added a third, but good work from Bruno Fernandes allowed Joshua Zirkzee to pull one back, with Amad Diallo then securing a second with 20 minutes to play.
United continued to attack and came close, but a controversial goal straight from a corner from Son Heung-min added a fourth on the night for Tottenham, although Bayındır felt he had been impeded.
Jonny Evans headed a further consolation in extra time, but Spurs were able to see out their slim victory as Amorim’s side fell to defeat in North London.
Neville fumes at Altay Bayındır’s error
While Bayındır conceded four goals on the night, Tottenham’s first is probably the weakest of the lot, with the Turkish international pawing Pedro Porro’s effort from range straight into Solanke’s path.
“We know Porro can hit them from distance, but I have to have another look at it from a ‘keeper’s perspective,” Neville fumed on commentary as he watched a replay of the finish.
“They recycle it to Porro who has a crack… and the goalkeeper, he has to push that wide. He can’t push that back into the danger zone.
“You could argue that the Manchester United defenders are sleeping, they have not gone back in, but as a ‘keeper, you have got to make sure that goes even out for a corner.”
Amorim’s gamble doesn’t pay off
It was a gamble to start Bayındır over André Onana, with Rúben Amorim likely wanting to see how his No. 1 would fair during a real-world fixture instead of in training.
He let Tottenham score four, despite the fact that Tottenham had an xG of just 0.67 on the night. It was clear that Bayındır was not up to the demands needed on the night.
He was handed a 2/10 rating for his performance in goal, with several nervy moments and a general lack of command showing just how vital Onana is to the team.
Amorim will reinstate his first-choice goalkeeper once United face Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
