Louis Saha has warned Ruben Amorim about one potential Manchester United transfer this summer which could be a “gamble” for the club.
Manchester United are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements next season after a dismal Premier League campaign this term.
Goalscoring has been a huge issue for Ruben Amorim’s side and there are uncertainties around the future of the likes of Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho.
There are several players that United are looking to sign this summer in order to bolster their frontline, with Matheus Cunha expected to be the first addition.
In terms of centre-forward targets, Liam Delap is the favoured option at Old Trafford and the Ipswich Town striker has a £30 million release clause in his contract.
Saha warns Amorim about dangerous United transfer
Delap has scored 12 goals in the Premier League this season and many will hope that he can kick on should he join United this summer.
However, there are certainly concerns over whether he can lead the line at Old Trafford at the age of 22 due to the problems Højlund has experienced.
This is the viewpoint United icon Louis Saha has, with the Frenchman describing a move for Delap as a “gamble not worth taking” this summer.
“It would be extremely dangerous, risky even for United to put all their faith in a youngster like Liam Delap,” Saha told Mega Dice.
“Even if he’s a quality player, for me it’s a gamble that isn’t worth taking. It’s his first season, where he’s confirming his talent in the Premier League.
“We definitely can see his quality, and the guy is a very intelligent player for his age, but he’s still learning, and he’s understanding how to cope with certain types of tactics, certain types of pressure.
“Bringing in another youngster like Rasmus, even if he has the advantage of being in the Premier League already, I think it’s a gamble.”
Delap being Premier League-proven could be important
There are plenty of United fans who share Saha’s opinion and would much prefer United to sign a ready-made striker with experience.
On the other hand, securing a Premier League-proven player could be considered more important than bringing in an older player who has never played in England’s top flight.
Delap has been able to score 12 goals in the division despite playing for a relegation-bound side and he can hopefully improve even more in a new-look United attack.
It still isn’t certain that the ex-Manchester City academy player makes the move across town, with the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle also interested.
Reports have suggested that he will make a final decision on his future before the U21 European Championship in the summer.
