Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has said Casemiro should be arrested for his actions against Crystal Palace that earned him the first straight red card of his career in Manchester United’s win.

This was just another example of Manchester United and their players being the main talking point for low-level punditry. We should be used to it. Erik ten Hag’s impact means that it’s slim pickings for what certain areas of the media can criticise.

The Brazilian midfielder was seen with his hands seemingly around the neck of Palace midfielder Will Hughes after a team-wide brawl broke out midway through the second half.

“Casemiro thought he was Brock Lesnar back in the UFC,” said Agbonlahor to talkSPORT.

“The way he was strangling Will Hughes, he should be arrested for that. Kids are watching that later on, on Match of the Day. Seeing Casemiro strangling an opponent.

This isn’t ice hockey in America where they have a scrap during the game. This is football, we don’t want to see that. So Casemiro needs to be disciplined by Manchester United.”

Unsurprisingly, Agbonlahor made those comments without analysing the situation whatsoever. If he did, it would’ve been clear that Casemiro was not ‘strangling’ Hughes and instead trying to move him away from the situation.

Perhaps the Brazilian was not smart by raising his hands that high, but to think there were any negative intentions is laughable.

“Casemiro is protecting our player and also protecting the player who wants to attack. He was holding him back, he was protecting him and didn’t want to hurt the player,” said Ten Hag.

The fact that the actions of Jordan Ayew went over the head of Agbonlahor also fails to shock. The Palace forward forcefully had his hand around the neck of Fred, a much worse action than Casemiro’s and came out unscathed due to the incompetence of VAR.

My interpretation is the same but you see the same things,” replied Ten Hag when asked about Ayew’s grab. “When Casemiro is sent off in this incident, many more players need to be sent off.”

Ultimately, United are always going to be under media scrutiny because they are the biggest club in the country. It’s a good sign that it’s no longer about the football that The Reds are playing, showing Ten Hag is doing the right things at Old Trafford.
