Manchester United’s stance on signing a new striker has now been revealed, and it has also been explained as to why their number nine shirt is currently vacant.
During the summer transfer window, Manchester United recruited three new attackers as they looked to resolve last seasons goalscoring woes.
Through the purchases of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško, United addressed their main problem area from last season, and they have recently started to reap the rewards of their spending.
Despite not getting off the mark yet, Cunha has been impressive for the Reds, whilst both Šeško and Mbeumo have scored two apiece in the league.
With Ruben Amorim’s side running off the high of back-to-back Premier League wins against Sunderland and Liverpool, they will now be turning their attention towards a home fixture against Brighton.
United’s no.9 vacancy
Despite the tides turning at United at the moment, there is still suspicion that the Reds will bring in another striker to compete with Šeško, as Joshua Zirkzee looks to potentially depart.
As reported by The United Stand on X, transfer expert Ben Jacobs suggests that United may bring in a new striker, one whom is more experienced than their current options.
The first post states that, “A more experienced striker is an option for United in January or the summer.”
Jacobs then goes on to say about United’s number nine shirt, that, “They left it free for a reason!”
United’s potential options
During the summer window, United were linked with a plethora of different striker targets before they eventually settled on their young Slovenian.
Given the recent reports from Jacobs, the Reds may end up opting to revisit one of their former targets, or they may pull a new name out of the hat.
Names such as Dusan Vlahovic and Ollie Watkins were prevalent during the summer window, and could be viable options in either January or next summer, depending on the future of Zirkzee.
Obviously, Šeško will be the main project striker for the Reds, but any striker who can offer him healthy competition, or any forward that he can learn from, will provide the club some benefit.
