Former Premier League striker calls Mason Greenwood’s Man Utd termination the “right call”
After days of internal investigations, Manchester United finally terminated Mason Greenwood’s contract, several months after all his charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Manchester United finally terminated their contract with Mason Greenwood, following severe backlash from the fans as well as internal officials. The club released a statement on Monday and announced its decision to let go of Greenwood.
The 21-year-old was accused of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault by his girlfriend. Within a few days, he was arrested and subsequently suspended by the club. However, earlier this year, all the charges against Greenwood were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
On August 16, 2023, Manchester United released a statement that stressed the fact that he is a young father and the club has “responsibilities to Mason as an employee.” Following this, the internet was divided, and the club faced severe backlash based on a few leaks that hinted that United were planning to include him in the squad.
On August 21, Manchester United released a statement in which they announced that Greenwood would be leaving the club.
Gary Lineker, a former Premier League striker who has played for Leicester City, Everton, and Spurs in England’s top flight of football, reacted to the news.
“Inevitable and right decision on an untenable situation, the former Barcelona striker wrote on X.
