Former Man United defender agrees with Marc Cucurella U-Turn as Sergio Reguilon completes medical
Manchester United are closing in on the loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon, with the Spaniard completing a medical at Carrington on Thursday evening.
That’s according to the ever-reliable David Ornstein, who added that it will be a straight season-long loan with no fee or option to buy. There is also a break clause in January and the United will also cover his wages.
Erik ten Hag’s side were initially looking to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on loan instead but decided against the move because they were unable to place a January transfer window break-clause in the contract.
Mauricio Pochettino started the full-back in their second-round Carabao Cup victory against League Two side Wimbledon on Wednesday evening, which meant that he would be unable to play for a third time in one season.
However, former United defender Mikael Silvestre believes it is the correct move from United to avoid the former Brighton left-back, with his defensive abilities in question.
“I’m not sure about Cucurella. Offensively, he has shown a lot of qualities, but defensively, he’s not great, and United need that platform at the back, so he wouldn’t be my number one pick,” he told bettingexpert.
However, it is also arguable that Reguilon is not defensively strong either and the Spaniard’s career has halted since joining Spurs from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020.
Ultimately though, with Diogo Dalot comfortable in the position and Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s eventual returns from injury, Reguilon would simply be adding up the numbers in the meantime according to the former Premier League player.
“Anyone that comes in would be a number three choice,” added Silvestre.

United were interested in the left-back during the summer in which he signed for the North London club but opted to sign Alex Telles instead.
Meanwhile, United are looking to get a deal for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat over the line on deadline day.
