Finance expert reveals how much Manchester United will save if Rúben Amorim sells four controversial players this summer

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson has revealed how much Manchester United can save this summer if Rúben Amorim sells four first-team players.

Manchester United are placing a major emphasis on outgoings this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to rebuild his squad at Old Trafford.

The club have already sealed a £62.5 million move for Matheus Cunha from Wolves and remain in talks with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo, although their opening offer of £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons was rejected.

United are still in the market for three positions, including: a striker, a midfielder and even a new goalkeeper. Several players will depart when their contracts expire at the end of June, with additional exits expected as Amorim reshapes the team.

Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are all set to move on this summer, while questions continue to hang over the future of Rasmus Højlund.

United could save an extra £90m from four players

Jason Wilcox and the transfer team are continuing to focus on outgoings this summer, but they remain keen on lowering the wage bill before the start of next season.

“It will make an enormous difference to Manchester United if they can remove Sancho, Antony, Casemiro and Rashford from the wage bill,” said former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson to FootballInsider

“Those players don’t play very much. Casemiro did play in the second half of the season, but generally, he’s going to play less given his age.

Borson later added: “If they can remove all of those players, the total cost of those players for next season could be £80 million, maybe £90 million.

“That’s a huge part of their wage bill just on those four players. So, if they can get those players out the door, then the financial side of things will continue to improve. Then the question will be, what do you do on the pitch?”

Casemiro is worth keeping this summer

Alongside United captain Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro is the only other regular first-team footballer to make over £300,000 a week.

Casemiro did not play many games under Amorim when the head coach first joined the club in November 2024, but worked his way into the team as the season went on. He later claimed that it was one of the best seasons of his career due to the adversity he had to overcome by not being selected.

Casemiro has shown himself to be a player who can fight back from hard times but also one who knows how to win, with the Brazilian being the only player within United’s squad to hold a Champions League trophy to his name, let alone five.

While Casemiro can no longer play 50 games a season, his form toward the end of last campaign has proved that he can still play a vital role on the pitch for Amorim going forward. His experience will also help new signings like Matheus Cunha settle in at Old Trafford.
