Having struggled for regular game time so far this season, one Manchester United star may leave the club in search of regular minutes.
Manchester United bolstered Rúben Amorim’s squad with several new first-team signings in the summer transfer window.
The main target for the window was clear: address the lack of goals from the previous season. To rectify the meagre 44 goals they scored in last season’s Premier League campaign, United spent a combined £214 million to bring in a brand new forward line.
Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were brought in to transform the attack, while also moving on Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund, Antony and Jadon Sancho.
Despite a host of forwards leaving Old Trafford over the summer, one player who has been kept at Old Trafford is Joshua Zirkzee, who was impressive at times towards the end of last season before picking up an injury.
Zirkzee could return to Italy
The Netherlands international, who has been described as ‘fantastic’, scored just seven goals last season and has only been able to pick up 78 minutes so far this campaign, partially owing to injury.
As reported by AreaNapoli, Journalist Gianluca Gifuni backs Zirkzee to push for a move to Napoli where he could reunite with Scott McTominay and last season’s strike partner, Højlund.
He said: “Those who are no longer used in England, like Joshua Zirkzee of Manchester United and Federico Chiesa of Liverpool, seeing what Højlund and De Bruyne are doing, are thinking.
“They’re saying: ‘Now I’m going to Naples and I’ll rise again, like they did.’ Just like McTominay did.”
Does Zirkzee have a future at United?
The journalist also spoke about whether clubs like United have to take some of the blame for players not working out at the club before rediscovering their form elsewhere.
He said: “In England, they’re swearing. They say, ‘Damn, when we sell someone to Napoli, he comes in and scores: is the problem ours, or is Napoli a happy place?’ It’s all true, go to X, Instagram, and TikTok, where hundreds of thousands of Manchester United fans are all saying the same thing.”
There were rumours of a potential exit for Zirkzee in the summer transfer window, but he has remained at the club to battle for his place. Unfortunately, with reports that United are looking to sign a back-up striker next summer, the 24-year-old’s time at Old Trafford may be coming to a close.
Zirkzee simply doesn’t suit Amorim’s tactical setup, as he is not a natural no.9. His best position is most likely in the no.10 role, a position where United have great depth.
