One Manchester United legend has shared his true opinion on the new man in the dugout, with the former captain leaving a shining review.
Michael Carrick has made his return to Old Trafford, filling the role of interim head coach after the shock departure of former head coach Ruben Amorim.
Carrick has so far impressed after winning all four of his fixtures, including beating Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City.
The 44-year-old has so far helped the Reds climb to fourth in the Premier League table, with their hopes of Champions League football not so much a fantasy anymore.
Although the Englishman’s role is onkt temporary, fans and pundits have both agreed that Carricks impact on the club has been monumental causing the question to arise in wether he’ll be the one to take the permenant role.
Is history repeating itself?
While Carrick’s run has been nothing but praiseworthy, his return has been likened to none other than former United legend and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Trebble-winning icon returned to Old Trafford back in 2018, taking the same position as Carrick as caretaker manager. Solskjaer impressed during his probation and earned himself the permanent role for the 2019/20 season.
Many fear that this is the same situation with Carrick and don’t want the club to make the same mistakes and ruin Carrick’s reputation with the fans. However Former United captain Wayne Rooney has disagreed with these claims.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the forward said, “Yeah, I think it comes from the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer job and I think Ole’s getting disrespected so much with people saying, ‘Oh, but it didn’t work out with Ole, so you can’t go Michael,’
“Michael is a different character [from] Ole. So, he is a different manager to Ole and Ole, actually, when we look back and look at how everyone’s done since [Sir] Alex Ferguson was manager, Ole was probably one of the better ones at what he done and, you know, we got to the Europa League final.
“Obviously, lost that [final] on penalties, I think he finished second and played some good stuff at times, so it was just the way it ended with Ole.”
“The way he’s started the job he’s doing fantastic” Rooney on Carrick’s start at Utd
Carrick worked under Solskjaer as part of his coaching staff but left the club in the 2021/22 Premier League Campaign after the Norwegian manager was sacked.
Ronney has insisted that Carrick is handling his role fantastically, providing a fresh mindset for the players, continuing his points: “So, yeah, I think, listen, Michael is, you know, he’s a calming influence on everyone and he’ll just be doing his job and I’m sure he’d love the job at the end of the season if that’s the case,”
“But I think he’ll just go about his business quietly and let the players take all the plaudits when it’s gone well. And if it’s not going well, then I’m sure he’ll step in and try and take that pressure off the players.
“So, he’s at the minute, the way he started and the job he’s doing is fantastic. So hopefully that can continue.”
