Fabrizio Romano has revealed the staggering truth behind Erik ten Hag’s final mistake as manager at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag was sacked at Manchester United towards the end of October after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

The club had gone through a poor run of form after an underwhelming campaign last season, and decided to pull the plug.

Ruben Amorim has come into Old Trafford and quickly improved several things, including the form of certain players.

Amad Diallo has three assists in three games under the 39-year-old and has been extremely impressive in the right wingback role.

Yet, he wasn’t even offered the chance to have poor form in Ten Hag’s final games at the club as he was no longer starting games.

After winning the club’s August Player of the Month award, Amad started just once in the final six games of Ten Hag’s tenure and was rarely afforded significant minutes off the bench.

Antony was preferred to him in multiple fixtures, with Ten Hag suggesting that the Brazilian was training better than Amad.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Amad contract truth

While everything is looking positive for Amad under new boss Amorim, that point of minimal game-time under Ten Hag was a low point for the player.

Fabrizio Romano has even revealed that it was what stalled contract negotiations between the Ivorian and the club.

“Before the summer transfer window I told you how this year was going to be crucial for Manchester United to extend the contract of Amad Diallo,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“The current deal expires in the summer of 2025 but Man United also have an option [to extend the deal by a year], it would be activated until 2026 but what’s the point.

“Man United in the summer, when Amad signed with new agents, restarted the conversations with new agents. They had really positive feelings because Amad is very happy at Man United and Man United are very happy with Amad.

“But then there was that moment between September and October where Erik ten Hag was not playing Amad anymore – you remember his face against Fenebache.

“Amad was not playing, Amad was not a starter, Amad was no longer trusted by the technical staff at Manchester United, so it was quite a difficult moment.

“And that was also having an impact on the contract talks, that’s why the new contract of Amad was not signed yet, because of the situation with the coaching staff was probably not the best one, they were not trusting him and Amad wants to play on a regular basis.

“Ruben Amorim absolutely loves Amad, he absolutely trusts Amad and Amad is very happy at Man United. He loves Man United and contract talks are now advancing very well. Sources believe this could happen before the end of the year.”

Ten Hag’s final mistake at United

Obviously hindsight can be a wonderful thing, but Amad had already showed his talent under Ten Hag towards the end of last season and the start of this one.

Not playing him in those final weeks in the job now looks like incredibly poor management from the Dutchman. We’ll never know, but perhaps the 22-year-old could have saved his job.

Fortunately for United, the situation with Amad has quickly been resolved under Amorim, who loves the 22-year-old and a new contract is set to be concluded soon.

There were many mistakes Ten Hag made at Old Trafford and this was one of his last ones. If it ended up allowing Amad to leave for free, it might have been one of his worst mistakes. Thankfully that is not going to be the case.
