André Onana has been the number one at Manchester United since his move from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.

Manchester United’s form under Ruben Amorim have been inconsistent so far, with five wins in his first nine games in charge.

They secured an impressive 2-1 victory over Manchester City last weekend but followed it up with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Despite these mixed results, the head coach is focusing on the team’s progress within his preferred tactical system.

Some players have adapted well and excelled under Amorim’s approach, while others have struggled. It is clear that the 39-year-old will need reinforcements to fully implement his style.

Given the club’s current financial constraints, United will likely need to sell players to generate funds for the signings Amorim requires.

Onana splits opinion at United

André Onana has started every Premier League game for the club since Erik ten Hag signed him two summers ago.

The goalkeeper has split opinion amongst the fanbase, particularly during his first season where he made several high profile errors in the Champions League.

Form in the league had been consistent for a long time and Onana was being considered as one of United’s best players this season.

But then, once again, two high profile errors leading to goals in recent weeks brought upon criticism for the no.24.

Romano reveals United’s stance on Onana

Despite these blips from the Cameroon shot-stopper, Fabrizio Romano has detailed that the club are backing the player and have confidence that he can be an important player under Amorim.

It was explained that there is an understanding that Onana will ‘need some time’ to get used to the new instructions in Amorim’s system. The new head coach places a lot of ball-playing responsibility.

That should suit Onana, who was considered one of the best goalkeepers with his feet before his move to Old Trafford.

“Yes, I don’t see any big problem or complaints about Onana,” Romano wrote in his column with GiveMeSport.

“The club invested big money on André, so they are backing him. Of course he’ll need some time to understand new indications by Ruben Amorim, but there’s confidence in Onana.”
