Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer and Fabrizio Romano has revealed one of the key reasons behind this.
Manchester United are set on rebuilding their attack this summer after a disappointing 2024/25 season, which saw them slump to 15th in the Premier League, largely due to a lack of firepower up front.
Bruno Fernandes ended the campaign as the club’s leading scorer with 19 goals, while just three other players managed to hit double figures across all competitions.
To help solve their attacking problems, United have spent £127.5 million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who combined for 35 Premier League goals last season.
With those wide additions in place, Ruben Amorim’s attention has now turned to securing a central striker to spearhead the attack, with Benjamin Sesko emerging as a potential target.
Fabrizio Romano reveals why United are discussing Sesko deal
Sesko, 22, has been considered one of Europe’s top strikers in recent years and could finally be on the move this summer and United are considering a deal.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that any deal would depend on player sales and also revealed that Christopher Vivell is playing a key role in their interest.
“I told you about Benjamin Sesko being one of the options for Manchester United,” the Italian journalist said. “Let me clarify that it’s not the only one and that United it’s going to be important to decide together internally at the club.
“But also how much they will have available in terms of money, also based on the outgoings, as I told you Rashford is gone, but also Antony with Betis pushing, also Sancho, also Alejandro Garnacho – so there’s many things to clarify.
“Sesko is a name being considered internally, at the moment there are no negotiations with Leipzig at this stage, but remember at Manchester United in the management team but there is Christopher Vivell.
“He is a director who knows Sesko very well, he came from Red Bull Group, so knows Benjamin Sesko, so that’s why interest internally is being discussed.
“So let’s see if Man United will decide to go for Sesko or for any other option, also based on what happens with Sancho, Antony and Garnacho.”
Sesko deal makes sense
As United learned with Viktor Gyokeres, you are not guaranteed a signing just because he’s familiar to someone in charge at the club.
But the difference with Sesko is that there are not many alternative options and it is being reported that he’s open to the move even without European football.
Sesko has been on United’s radar for several years and it does feel like a deal that makes sense now that Vivell is running the recruitment at the club.
Yet it feels like there will have to be some sort of compromise on the fee otherwise United will undoubtedly look elsewhere, even if they secure a couple of major sales.
