Fabrizio Romano has revealed what Bryan Mbeumo said to Brentford after his club rejected Manchester United’s opening bid for the Cameroon international.
Rúben Amorim’s 2025 summer rebuild at Manchester United is off to a dream start, beginning with a £62.5 million agreement to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves on the opening day of the transfer window.
Day two brought more encouragement, as David Ornstein reported that Bryan Mbeumo is keen on a move to Old Trafford, despite firm interest from Newcastle, Arsenal, and Tottenham.
That momentum continued with confirmation that Bruno Fernandes has decided to stay at the club, rejecting a huge contract offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal.
With two signings in motion and Fernandes committed, United will now turn their focus to player sales to support the next phase of Amorim’s overhaul.
What Mbeumo told Brentford after rejected bid
On Wednesday night, The Athletic revealed that United had sent Brentford an opening bid of £45 million with a further £10 million in add-ons for the Cameroon international, which was below the level of offer that the London club are hoping for.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has released the latest on the situation following this bid, explaining that the bid has been rejected, but that Mbeumo has sent a “very clear message” to his current club.
“Manchester United have started club-to-club negotiations with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo – The deal is now on,” Romano explained on his YouTube channel.
“A few days ago, the player told all the clubs interested in England, and not only England, for example Newcastle, Arsenal, all these clubs, keen on signing Brian, received a clear message. The player wants to go to Manchester United.
“Now we can say that the player sent a very clear message to Brentford: He really hopes for the deal to happen, and now Manchester United and Brentford are in club-to-club conversations.
Manchester United presented a first proposal, as reported by The Athletic in the recent hours, is £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons, rejected by Bredford. Bredford are not accepting this money.
“They were starting from £70 million, and then in the first conversations they had with Man United and those close to Bryan Mbeumo, they clearly said that they would accept something similar to what Manchester United paid for Matheus Cunha. So let’s see, between £60 to 65 million, so with a small discount compared to the 70 million pounds initial pricing for this deal.
“Now, let’s see what’s going to happen, because Manchester United want to accelerate. Manchester United will be in talks with Brentford also in the next days.”
Why are United signing Mbeumo this summer?
Mbeumo is undoubtedly a top talent, and having scored 20 league goals last season, is a very hot property on the transfer market.
However, some fans have questioned why United are gunning for the right-sided attacker when Amad was one of Amorim’s best players across the last six months.
Romano further clarified that the club see the Mbeumo signing, alongside Cunha, as further reinforcement to help Amorim build a team more capable of competing in the Premier League and coping with the competition’s physical demands.
The Italian said: “They believe that having players like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, goals, assists, Premier League proven, experienced but not old players, players who are in the best moment of their career, they believe that Manchester United, this could be the perfect step to keep helping Ruben Amorim after a difficult season.
“So, club to club negotiations ongoing. The player wants to go to Manchester United. And now, we will be following the next steps of this deal.”
