Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United focusing on two “crucial” decisions after Bryan Mbeumo transfer, they’re season-defining

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained that Manchester United are now focusing on two priority areas in the summer transfer window following the signing of Bryan Mbeumo.

After around six weeks of negotiations with Brentford, Manchester United finally reached a transfer agreement to sign Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo.

Rúben Amorim’s club will sign the winger for a base fee of £65 million over four instalments, with a further £6 million in add-ons that can be unlocked through the club’s achievements, such as qualifying for the Champions League.

The 25-year-old becomes the club’s third first-team signing this summer following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, and is set to become United’s new right forward.

After scoring 20 goals in the Premier League last campaign, Mbeumo brings much-needed scoring abilities, as well as adding to Amorim’s creative arsenal ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

United’s two new top priorities

With Mbeumo’s deal now over the line and just a few pieces of paperwork remaining, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained that the club are now set to move their focus toward two new priorities in the market.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated that United will now look to sign a new striker and accelerate their player sales, with the second being a “crucial” part of their plan for the remainder of the summer transfer window.

There is little doubt that if United can secure significant funding and bring in a new, seasoned striker, this could completely change the course of the club’s upcoming campaign.

It is “very important” that the club can generate further funding, with the striker position still high on their list of priorities. However, Romano states that United are also still considering signing a goalkeeper amid a hamstring injury to André Onana.

Depending on their finances, it may be the case that United try to sign a young goalkeeper to compete with Onana, an experienced one to overtake the Cameroonian, or allocate the funds elsewhere and stick with their current crop for another season.

United considering Martínez swap deal

One shot-stopper United have been routinely linked with this summer is Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez, who is well known to want to join Amorim’s squad this summer.

According to the Italian transfer guru, United have held internal discussions regarding the possibility of approaching Villa with a proposal for a swap deal, rather than incurring a transfer fee to secure the 32-year-old.

Although no club-to-club talks have taken place, it is undoubtedly a topic of interest at Old Trafford, as the club knows that the Argentina international is very keen on signing for the club this summer.

Romano did not mention it, but amid United’s want for a striker, there is also the possibility that, with United eyeing Villa’s striker Ollie Watkins and the Birmingham club interested in young winger Alejandro Garnacho, a trade of sorts between the two attackers could become a distinct possibility.
