Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on the transfer status of Victor Lindelöf amid January’s interest from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

Manchester United are within the 2025 January transfer window while the club is in turmoil, having endured four consecutive defeats across the Premier League and Carabao Cup before the new year.

However, a hard-fought 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool has provided a much-needed boost, easing some of the tension surrounding the squad’s recent performances.

Rúben Amorim faces the difficult task of addressing the team’s deficiencies, with reinforcements urgently needed at left-back, centre-back, striker, and across midfield.

But the club’s finances remain under significant strain following years of heavy investment under Erik ten Hag, complicating their ability to make major signings.

To overcome these challenges, United are focused on offloading players in January and the summer to generate funds for the rebuild, hoping to lay the foundation for a brighter future.

Romano provides latest on Leicester’s pursuit of Lindelöf

According to reports from late last year, Leicester City are keen on signing United central defender and Sweden national team captain Victor Lindelöf.

Leicester, now managed by former striker and United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, is said to be keen on bringing in the 30-year-old to add much-needed defensive reinforcement and experience to his backline.

The Foxes currently sit 19th in the Premier League table and two points away from safety, finding themselves firmly in a relegation battle.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on the potential move, explaining that he does not think Lindelöf is keen on the move in January.

“For Leicester, despite the links we had with Victor Lindelöf, I’m not sure the player is keen on leaving Man United to go to Leicester in January,” Romano informed GiveMeSport.

“But just in general, I think Leicester will be busy in the January [transfer window].”

Lindelöf’s time at United is coming to an end

Despite the apparent desire to stay at the club, Lindelöf’s time will come to an end at United at the end of the current campaign.

His £120,000 a week contract is set to expire at the end of June and despite United activating a one-year extension last season, no further long-term deal has been offered to the player, meaning he will leave for free at the end of his deal.

He is one of several players who are expected to released once their contracts expire, with Christian Eriksen and Tom Heaton both due to depart, too.

Jonny Evans’ current contract expires, but the club may choose to extend this as an extra option in defence, while Amad Diallo is expected to put pen to paper on a new five-year deal this week.
