Fabrizio Romano has said one star’s future is “one to watch” for a Manchester United transfer after the player recently switched agencies.

Manchester United are reportedly pursuing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes for a potential move in 2025 as Rúben Amorim seeks to address the defensive frailties that have plagued his side since taking charge at Old Trafford.

Amorim has struggled to shore up United’s backline, with the team particularly vulnerable at set pieces. A dip into the transfer market appears inevitable as the club looks to strengthen their defensive options.

The left-back position has been a persistent issue for United over the past decade. Luke Shaw, their first-choice in the role, has faced recurring injury problems ever since suffering a horrific double leg fracture in a 2015 Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s backup, recently returned to action after a gruelling 17-month recovery from a serious knee injury that required multiple surgeries.

In their absence, Diogo Dalot has been tasked with covering at left-back, but Amorim has admitted that the defender is better suited to his natural position on the right flank.

Kerkez a “one to watch” for United transfer

Although Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Nuno Mendes is certainly a player United appreciate, he is not the only left-back option the club are considering.

The transfer specialist explained on Monday afternoon that Bournemouth full-back Milos Kerkez has recently switched agencies and is now represented by super agent Fali Ramadani’s Lian Sports, who also manage those such as Federico Chiesa, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Maurizio Sarri as clients.

Continuing, Romano stated that the 20-year-old’s future is one to watch, mentioning Manchester United as the highlight club that are keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a potential transfer in 2025.

Kerkez has starred for Bournemouth as they have risen to 6th in the league table and recently impressed those watching at Old Trafford during Bournemouth’s 3-0 win over the Reds in the Premier League, with the youngster having an outstanding display against Amad Diallo.

Who else are United targeting at left-back?

Aside from Kerkez and Mendes, United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Benfica left-back Álvaro Fernández, who moved to the Portuguese club from United last January. Initially joining on loan, the deal was made permanent soon after.

A move for the 21-year-old could prove highly cost-effective for United. While his contract includes a £42 million release clause, Rúben Amorim’s side retain a £16 million buy-back option, which is valid until 2026.

Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl around United’s interest in Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies. The Canadian international is expected to leave the Bundesliga giants on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2025, with United reportedly keen to bring him to Old Trafford as early as this summer.

Finally, the club are also thought to rate 17-year-old academy star Harry Amass in the position. Amorim has been called to give the young player a chance amid the club’s continued problems in the position.
