Manchester United have a number of decisions to make regarding who to sign as Rúben Amorim looks to completely rebuild his midfield at Old Trafford next year.
Manchester United are expected to strengthen their midfield in 2026, though it’s still uncertain whether the addition will come in January or in the summer.
Rúben Amorim and the club’s recruitment team identified Carlos Baleba as their top target last summer, but Brighton’s £100 million price tag led United to step back. Personal terms had already been agreed, and Baleba was keen to make the move.
United are also keeping a close eye on Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton remains a name regularly discussed behind the scenes.
This month, there have also been claims that United are considering a January approach for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, with Wolves currently battling relegation.
Wolves send clear message over Gomes transfer
There have been very conflicting reports surrounding Gomes’ possible move to United, with those in Brazil claiming the player has already said yes to a move, while English outlets state there has been no contact between the two clubs.
It was claimed earlier this month that, with Wolves fighting relegation and having appointed Rob Edwards as manager to fix the mess, those surrounding Gomes are adamant the player wants to leave the club.
However, Wolves are said to have informed Edwards that they have no plans to sell any of their key stars in January amid their attempt to fight off relegation from the Premier League.
In a clear message to all clubs trying to pry away their best players in january, Wolves have also reportedly been staving off interest in their other midfielder, André, from clubs in Brazil.
United’s position on Gomes transfer made clear
Amid Wolves making it well-known that no January exits will be considered, United’s response and stance on a possible move for the 24-year-old has been clarified by Fabrizio Romano.

According to the transfer expert, although Gomes is one name under consideration at Old Trafford, he is seen as a possible opportunity signing if Wolves are open to a January sale, rather than one of their key targets for 2026 such as Elliot Anderson.
That being said, Romano also clarified on his YouTube channel that Gomes is “very keen on a move” to United, and would be happy to join the club in january even without the prospect of European football.
His situation will depend on Wolves and on whether Manchester United decide to pursue an opportunity signing or wait for their top priorities,” Romano concluded, stating that the trnasfer is still one to watch despite Wolves’ hard stance against January sales.
