Fabrizio Romano has handed a crucial update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Patrick Dorgu as the club consider a second option for Rúben Amorim.

Manchester United are targeting a new left wing-back for Rúben Amorim in the January transfer window, as defensive frailties continue to disrupt their season.

Under Amorim’s management, United have struggled at the back, with set-piece defending standing out as a recurring issue. Strengthening the left-back position has become a top priority.

Luke Shaw, United’s first-choice left-back for years, has been plagued by injuries since his horrific double leg fracture in a Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s deputy, has also faced challenges, recently returning from a gruelling 17-month recovery after undergoing multiple knee surgeries.

Diogo Dalot has been covering at left-back in their absence, though Amorim has acknowledged that the Portuguese defender is better suited to his natural role on the right-hand side.

Romano provides crucial Dorgu to United update

For the left wing-back position, United have seemingly settled on Lecce talent Patrick Dorgu for the position, with the 20-year-old having made waves in the Serie A after great performances within a struggling team.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, United have seen a bid of around £23 million rejected for the Denmark international, but crucially, he clarified that talks will continue between both clubs.

The Italian further explained that there is “no doubt” that United will sign a new player for the left wing-back position before the end of the winter window, which is set to close on 3 February.

However, he also revealed that United are continuing to monitor Alvaro Fernandez as another option for the position, with the club currently having a buy-back option of £17 million available to them.

Why a new left wing-back helps three players

Signing a new left-back in January will not only bolster United’s defensive and attacking options, but it will also benefit three players, which is key for Amorim.

Firstly, it will allow Dalot to shift back to his more natural right-sided position, with the Portuguese international clearly struggling to adapt to life as an auxiliary left wing-back.

This will, in turn, benefit Amad as the right-sided attacking midfielder, as he will have more support from a naturally right-sided player on the right flank, allowing him to invert onto his left foot.

Finally, Dalot’s ability to shift back to the right will allow Noussair Mazraoui to revert to the right centre-back role where he shone during Amorim’s opening weeks, which will benefit United’s build-up.
