Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United have decided £150k p/w player “will leave” this summer
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirms that Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen will leave Old Trafford this summer after a decision taken by the club.
Christian Eriksen’s spell at Manchester United has combined flashes of success with injury struggles that have diminished his importance under Erik ten Hag and resulted in further demotion by new head coach Rúben Amorim.
During his first six months at Old Trafford, Eriksen formed a strong midfield alliance with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. However, a January 2023 injury sidelined him for several months, preventing him from fully reclaiming his place.
His standing in the squad has also been affected by Kobbie Mainoo’s rise to prominence last season, and many expected him to leave in the 2024 summer window, although come deadline day, he stayed at Old Trafford.
Eriksen started the 2024/25 season with gusto, providing three goals and three assists during the opening matches. Still, his position in the side soon diminished again, and Amorim has since sidelined Eriksen as he did not fit the mould of his new system.
Romano confirms United have made a decision on Eriksen
Speaking with GiveMeSport, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United have now officially decided that Eriksen’s £150000 per week contract will not be extended and that he will be allowed to leave for free once it expires in June 2025.
“Manchester United have already decided internally that his contract will not be extended and that the Danish midfielder will leave on a free transfer in the summer – only a good proposal could change the story and see him leave in January,” Romano explained.
“Real Betis were keen on signing Eriksen at the end of the summer window, but they were not able to agree on terms on both club and player side.
“In case a good club appears with a good proposal for the player, United could be open to facilitating his exit and move on from a signing strongly wanted by previous manager Erik ten Hag.
“However, Amorim’s vision goes in a different direction, as he wants intensity everywhere, especially in the midfield.”
It’s impossible to play Eriksen in Amorim’s system
Speaking late last month, former Premier League striker Alan Shearer explained that he feels it’s “impossible” for either Eriksen or Casemiro to play in Amorim’s side.
“For a start, he’s got injuries in midfield, hasn’t he? I mean, he played Casemiro and Eriksen,” Shearer said on The Rest Is Football.
“It would be nigh on impossible for those two to do what he wants in terms of the press and the high energy and the sprint and the running and everything else.”
This will no doubt be a significant factor in why United have chosen to let Eriksen leave the club for free. With United possessing talents such as Mainoo and Ugarte in midfield, and with Amorim keen to bring in new midfielders this summer, there is simply no space for an ageing Eriksen.
