Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that one of Manchester United’s most important players will not be departing under Rúben Amorim after confirmations around talks about his future.

Manchester United have spent the past year cutting costs and raising transfer funds as Sir Jim Ratcliffe works to stabilise the club’s finances.

After moving Jadon Sancho to Chelsea last summer, United continued their clear-out in January, loaning Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, sending Antony to Real Betis for the rest of the season, and allowing Tyrell Malacia to join PSV Eindhoven—reducing the wage bill by over £2 million per month.

Several academy graduates also left on loan during the winter window, though these moves were primarily aimed at securing game time for fringe players in Rúben Amorim’s squad rather than financial relief.

Despite these departures, United still have several high earners on their books, with the contracts of Casemiro, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount frequently criticised by fans as poor financial decisions.

Many of these players are expected to be sold or released in the coming months as the club seek to raise funds ahead of what could be a major summer transfer window.

Romano confirms stance on Fernandes’ future

Despite United wanting to offload many of their high-paid players, one who will be heading absolutely nowhere is Bruno Fernandes.

The club captain put pen to paper on a new Manchester United contract in August 2024, where he will earn £300,000 a week until the deal expires in 2027. However, there has been speculation surrounding his future of late after he revealed that he had an offer to leave the club last summer.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano explained that despite the speculation, the 30-year-old will be staying at United for the foreseeable future, and he’s seen as a key player for head coach Amorim.

“He signed a new deal eight months ago as he trusts the project and he’s a key player for Rúben Amorim. He’s so important for United and he’s staying,” Romano said.

What Fernandes said about summer transfer interest

When Fernandes revealed that he had an offer to leave United in the summer of 2024, he also explained that he held talks with the club surrounding his future, where he wanted clarity from United and former manager Erik ten Hag before making a decision on his transfer.

“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave, we talked about the possibility of me leaving the club or staying,” Fernandes revealed earlier this year. “They said what they wanted from me. I just asked if they still see me as part of the future of the club or not.

“I spoke at the time with Ten Hag also. He was very clear with me, the club was very clear with me, that they thought I would be a big part of this rebuild that they want to do in a different way. I heard what they had to tell me.

“I thought that we could be successful. Unfortunately, we didn’t start the season very well. Erik had to lose his job by the results we had and the performance we had, but the fault was on everyone and everyone together with the manager.

“Now we are in a different moment with a new manager that thinks in a different way, that has a different way of playing. I’m still very happy at the club, I’m being always happy at the club to play for this club, to represent the club is a big honour for me.

“It doesn’t matter where we are in the league, it will always be an honour for me to be at this club and I will try my best to keep the club fighting for everything we can.”
