Fabrizio Romano reveals Man United’s potential Manuel Ugarte solution – also “one to watch” if transfer fails
Fabrizio Romano has revealed the details of Manchester United’s midfield chase, with a potential Manuel Ugarte solution and ‘one to watch’ for the coming weeks.
The Reds started the summer well and managed to secure the signings of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee before the pre-season tour.
Transfers then went quiet as United attempted to negotiate different deals. The new INEOS regime, including Dan Ashworth and Omar Berrada, were also present in America.
It has since been revealed that a double deal for Bayern Munich defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui has been agreed between clubs.
Personal terms had already been sorted and the two players are set for their United medicals early next week.
Following on from those signings, the Reds are still in the market for a midfielder and have several different options. Manuel Ugarte was the primary option but the Reds moved away from a potential deal due to Paris Saint-Germain’s price tag.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have spoken to the agents of Sander Berge and considers the Burnley midfielder as “one to watch” if the club decide to go for a cheaper option.
However, the Italian journalist also interestingly detailed that while United does not want to pay £51 million for his signature, there is another potential way for the transfer.
He explained that another midfield sale from Old Trafford could allow United to potentially close a deal for the PSG player.
“United also remain busy in the search for a new midfielder – they spoke with the agents of Sander Berge and have considered other options,” he wrote in his Daily Briefing.
“But their top target remains Manuel Ugarte. PSG will have to drop their price as United will not pay crazy money, otherwise they could also sell one player in that position.
“It could be Scott McTominay or Casemiro, we will see, but they will likely need a sale in order to finance the deal.
“Still, United could also go for a cheaper midfielder, so Berge could be one to watch after contacts with his agent, while Sofyan Amrabat remains a player on their list even after they initially decided not to sign him permanently from Fiorentina after last season’s loan came to an end.
“Amrabat remains appreciated by Ten Hag, so there are some Plan B options behind Ugarte, but let’s wait and see what happens with PSG on that one.”
