Fabrizio Romano confirms new Man Utd midfield target for next summer, he “would not be surprised” if 21yo made move

Fabrizio Romano has revealed the name of a Manchester United target for the next summer transfer window as the Reds look to strengthen their midfield.

Manchester United were rumoured throughout the summer to be in the market for a new defensive midfielder, although this never came to fruition.

Ruben Amorim’s side purchased three new attackers, as well as a new goalkeeper, for a grand total in the region of £230million.

Despite a very proactive summer, the Reds have struggled to get off the mark in the Premier League, with four points from their first three games, as well as a Second Round exit in the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town.

It has been made clear that United are looking to strengthen their midfield department in the future windows, and now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed one potential target for Amorim’s side.

Romano confirms United target

According to transfer insider Romano, via Caught Offside, the Red Devils could be set to target Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace next summer.

Romano said on his YouTube channel, “I think if something happens, it’s going to be after the World Cup, but for sure, now, the focus of the player is on Crystal Palace.

“He didn’t want to move this summer, and he was not pushing for a move, because he’s fully focused on Palace.

“Then in 2026, I would not be surprised if something happens, because Premier League clubs, but also clubs in Spain, including Real Madrid, are monitoring the boy, and so let’s see what’s going to happen.”

United’s new transfer method

With the Reds potentially pursuing Wharton in the next summer transfer window, a clear trend in United’s transfer targets starts to become apparent.

Amorim’s side targeted Carlos Baleba from Brighton this summer, although a deal wasn’t deemed possible at the time, but still the trend remains clear.

Having already signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, it is obvious that United are starting to look within the English top-flight for ready-made players that can instantly improve their starting XI.

Given the fact that Cunha and Mbeumo have both impressed in the early stages of their careers at Old Trafford, this method seems to be one that could warrant success for the Reds in the future.
