Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United ‘tried to sign’ a £34million former Premier League midfielder in the last 48 hours of the transfer window.
The summer transfer window has now slammed shut after an eventful few months, which saw Manchester United heavily invest in an attempt to strengthen their squad.
Ruben Amorim’s side first looked to eradicate their attacking problems through the additions of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo, before then addressing the goalkeeping department.
The Red Devils went in pursuit of Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens, who was finally signed on deadline day for a fee of £18million.
Although this addition was the final signing of the window for Amorim’s side, it has now been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano that United ‘tried to sign’ a former Premier League star on loan.
Gallagher loan pursuit not possible
On YouTube, the Italian transfer insider spoke about United’s midfield situation and mentioned the fact that the Reds attempted to sign Conor Gallagher in the last 48 hours of the window.
Romano said, via Stretty News, “In the last 48 hours of the summer transfer window, Manchester United tried to sign Conor Gallagher. Man United considered that possibility – to go for Conor Gallagher.
“Then, it was not possible to make it happen because Man United wanted to sign Gallagher on a loan deal, while Atletico Madrid already rejected an approach from Crystal Palace 10 days ago for Gallagher on loan.”
It is still unknown as to whether United will revisit their interest in the former Chelsea man in January when the window opens again.
United’s midfield depth
It was well reported in the final week of the window that United star Kobbie Mainoo asked if he could leave on loan due to a lack of game time in the first few fixtures of the season, although this request was denied.
Amorim seems to have a complicated conundrum at the moment, where he has multiple midfielders to select from, but none of whom suit his unique system.

So far this season, we have seen captain Bruno Fernandes shoehorned into a deeper role, forcing Mainoo out of the side, whilst Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte compete for the holding midfield slot.
Although no midfield additions were made this summer, some will likely be on the horizon in the coming windows, which will definitely be a topic to watch out for.
