Fabrizio Romano confirms Man Utd’s plans to sell forgotten star after Ruben Amorim decision, he could depart in January

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Manchester United’s plans to sell a forgotten star, with his potential departure coming in the January transfer window.

Manchester United are currently in a solid run of form, with five games unbeaten for Ruben Amorim’s side in the Premier League.

New signings such as Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens have impressed and there are already reports about United’s transfer plans going forward into 2026.

It has also been suggested that Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo could look for January departures from Old Trafford due to their minimal game-time so far this season, but United are unlikely to sanction either of their exits.

On the other hand, Tyrell Malacia could be one player who departs the club in January after failing to complete a summer move.

Romano confirms United’s plans to sell Malacia after Amorim decision

Malacia was recently reintegrated into the United squad after being part of the ‘bomb squad’ in the summer, although he has not made any appearances for the club this term.

Following on from his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, the defender saw a transfer to Liga side Elche break down just before deadline day and he could not find any other moves.

While he is staying fit at Carrington and training with the team, which is important after his horrid injury troubles in prior years, Malacia is unlikely to ever play for United again.

“At the moment, the most likely scenario is to part ways. This remains the intention on the club’s side for the future,” Fabrizio Romano confirmed when discussing Malacia in his GiveMeSport column.

The player and club will be hoping that they can part ways in January so that Malacia can finally try and kickstart his career after recovering from his injuries.

United could look to strengthen on left side

Malacia’s exit will not fetch a large fee for United but there doesn’t seem to be any plans for mid-season moves at Old Trafford anyway.

Considering the club is only competing in two competitions, it does seem sensible to wait until the summer when there is more chance of securing their main targets.

That will mainly be in midfield, with the potential of at least two additions in the engine room, but United could also look to strengthen at wingback.

While Malacia is clearly not the answer, the likes of Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot continue to struggle in that position and Amorim could look for an upgrade.
