Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Jadon Sancho’s potential Manchester United exit has entered “crucial hours” as he continues contract negotiations with Chelsea.
After lighting up the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, Jadon Sancho has found it difficult to replicate that form in England since joining Manchester United for around £73 million in 2021.
With just 15 goal contributions in 58 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, the club opted to send him out in search of a fresh start.
A loan return to Dortmund brought flashes of his former brilliance, but not enough to secure a permanent deal, prompting United to loan him to top-six rivals Chelsea instead.
At Stamford Bridge, Sancho has enjoyed a more productive spell, tallying 15 goal contributions in 42 matches, capped off by a stunning strike in Chelsea’s Conference League final triumph last Wednesday.
Sancho deal now entering crucial hours
With Sancho’s future currently hanging in the balance, many assumed he would be heading back to United this summer, with Chelsea paying a £5 million penalty to avoid a £25 million fee for keeping the player beyond this summer.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there is a real chance Sancho could end up staying at Stamford Bridge, with the winger in talks with Chelsea about a potential long-term contract.
The situation of Jadon Sancho… crucial hours today, tomorrow, let’s say this week, Chelsea will make the decision on Jadon Sancho,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“They have two options. Sign the player on a permanent transfer for a total package around £25 million or send the player back to Manchester United for £5 million penalty. So these are the two options. But as of today, these hours, everything can be decided. So get ready for the Jadon Sancho case.
“But for sure, the understanding on Jadon Sancho is that they are negotiating especially on contract terms with the player. Why? Because Sancho was on a big salary at Manchester United.
“You remember that when he signed from Borussia Dortmund, he was a superstar signing on a big salary, and so now Chelsea want to fix this situation. They don’t want to pay that amount of money because their salary structure is different. Chelsea have very clear salary policy.
“What’s important to mention on Jadon Sancho is that Chelsea are discussing with his agents about contract terms.
“If they can agree on contract terms, Sancho can end up staying at Chelsea. Otherwise, he will go back to Manchester United.”
Sancho staying at Chelsea would be a major boost for Amorim
If Sancho were to remain at Stamford Bridge this summer, it would be a major boost for United head coach Rúben Amorim and his club. Not just because it would see the club earn £25 million and rid Sancho of their wage books, but also because it would save them so much time.
If Sancho were to return to United, there are plenty of clubs who have been lining up to talk to the Old Trafford outfit about signing him, with his former side Dortmund and Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce both reportedly interested.
However, with Amorim looking to sign five or six new first-team players and offload as many as ten from the club, dealing with Sancho’s future on top of this would take up valuable time at the club.
But if Sancho can agree on new terms with Chelsea, United would be able to finally close what has been a miserable chapter for all parties involved, and the winger can move on and start a fresh life untethered from United.
