Manchester United’s squad have disagreed with former defender Wes Brown on who Rúben Amorim’s “perfect” striker signing is this summer.
Manchester United are now prioritising the signing of a new centre-forward as Rúben Amorim continues to reshape his attack ahead of the upcoming season.
Bruno Fernandes ended last season as the club’s top scorer with 19 goals, with only three other players reaching double figures across all competitions.
To address their lack of cutting edge, United have already spent £127.5 million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who scored 15 and 20 Premier League goals respectively in the previous campaign.
Both wingers are currently in the United States, training with their new teammates during pre-season. With the wide positions reinforced, Amorim is now focused on bringing in a central striker, with Benjamin Šeško widely reported to be the club’s preferred target.
Brown urged United to sign Watkins
After United missed out on their first-choice target, Liam Delap, earlier this summer, and then watched as Amorim’s favourite, Victor Gyökeres, went from Sporting CP to Arsenal, United turned their attention to other options in the market.
When assessing United’s current options in June, while the club were still pursuing Mbeumo, having just announced Cunha, former United defender West Brown suggested the club look to secure Ollie Watkins.
The former Champions League winner detailed that, due to his Premier League experience and ability to hit close to 20 goals a season consistently, Watkins would be the “perfect” player at United.
The England international is very good with the ball at his feet, can consistently produce goals, and would be fantastic at bringing those around him, such as Amad, Fernandes, Cunha, and Mbeumo, into play.
United’s players have their own view on Šeško
However, Brown’s view on Watkins as United’s perfect striker is not one shared by those within the club’s first team squad.
According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, with United aiming to sign Šeško this summer, the club’s players have been in contact with the 22-year-old Slovenian international and instead see him as the “perfect” striker to complement their current set-up at Old Trafford.

“What I can tell you is that Šeško has been in contact with more than one Manchester United player already, and there are several within the Manchester United squad that think he would be perfect in this system as well,” Jacobs told The United Stand on YouTube.
“So there’s a fair amount of excitement within the Manchester United dressing room about the potential arrival of Benjamin Šeško.”
While Šeško could cost the club upward of £70 million this summer, the arrivals of Cunha and Mbeumo, as well as a more settled style of play in the coming season, can create an environment for the talented young striker to survive.
