Ex Premier League star makes fresh contract decision with Manchester United interest known

A decision has been made over a former Premier League midfielder returning to England with Manchester United.

Manchester United currently sit in fourth in the Premier League following the victory over the league leaders Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Michael Carrick’s side are yet to see any signings made in the January transfer window despite being heavily linked to many stars.

Patrick Dorgu’s injury – which sees him out for ten weeks – may be cause for concern as United look for a loanee to fill in for the wing-back who was on top form before his injury against Arsenal.

It is likely that United won’t be able to complete any signings in the January window as the decision over the permanent manager is yet to be made. United would rather fully back a new manager in the summer with signings that fit their system.

Many fans are hoping that temporary head coach Carrick will be able to stay through the summer if his incredible form continues. United have seemed to be a completely new side following his arrival, and with a relatively easier run of fixtures now, United are looking to solidify their Champions League spot.

Neves makes fresh contract decision

Ruben Neves has been linked with a Manchester United move throughout the season as the club look to strengthen their midfield with cheaper, Premier League-proven options. The midfielder seemed to be running down his contract to attract a move back to England.

Reports from Gianluigi Longari say that the Ex-Wolves star has now agreed to extend his contract with Al Hilal for three additional years to take his stay to 2029, although no official announcement has been made.

Neves played over 250 games for Wolves, gaining years of experience in both the Championship and Premier League. He has now made over 110 appearances for Al Hilal following his move in July of 2023.

United will be forced to look elsewhere for a Premier League-proven midfielder, but it’s unlikely another option will be available for as low a fee as Neves would have been. With signings unlikely in the remainder of January, they will look to the summer.

United to boost their midfield in summer

United have a shortlist of rumoured options to boost their midfield in the summer. Earlier this week, Casemiro announced that he is leaving the club at the end of the season, leaving United’s defensive midfield options looking shaky.

Manuel Ugarte has failed to start under Carrick so far, following some shaky form towards the end of Rúben Amorim’s tenure. Kobbie Mainoo has found his way back into the United side under Carrick, playing alongside Casemiro, allowing him to be found all over the pitch.

United have been heavily linked with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who has been amongst Forest’s top performers following his signing from Newcastle in July 2024. He would be a great fit with years of Premier League experience at a young age.

Other options include Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who has had a slight dip in form compared to his excellent 2024/25 season, but the Cameroon international has proved his ability as well as teasing the United move on social media. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki have also been amongst the rumours.
