Ruben Amorim has praised Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount before his opening game against Ipswich Town.

Mason Mount has had a struggling time at Manchester United since he joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

The midfielder’s first season at Old Trafford was filled with injuries and despite a strong start to his second campaign in red, injury issues have once again impacted his progress.

After returning to action under Ruud van Nistelrooy just before the international break, the 25-year-old has had a full week of training under new boss Ruben Amorim and clearly impressed.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” enthused Amorim in his pre-match interview with the club’s internal media channel.

“You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

Mount’s best form in his career came under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, with the German manager implementing a 3-4-3 system to help win them the Champions League.

Of course, Mount is about to play in that system once again and Amorim has suggested that there are two different positions that he can play.

“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him,” Amorim added. “I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”

You would assume that the main role for Mount in the team would be as one of the two no.10s behind the striker, which is where he succeeded under Tuchel.

The other is likely in the slightly deeper midfield role as a no.8 – where Erik ten Hag regularly tried to fit him into the team.

Mount could be in contention to start the game against Ipswich Town on Sunday, which would be his first time in the starting XI since 24 August against Brighton.
