Every Man Utd player who can discuss free transfers in January, two must stay
Manchester United have six different players who can begin discussing the possibility of a free transfer exit in the January transfer window.
Players can begin discussing free contract exits to foreign clubs in the mid-season transfer window if their contract is expiring at the end of the current campaign.
United have been well involved in these such moves in recent years, with many players such as Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani leaving the club for free.
As the January transfer window approaches, the Reds are reportedly planning to boost Ruben Amorim’s squad with signings in key positions such as left wingback.
It is already clear after his first 10 games in charge that Amorim will need more players who suit his 3-4-3 system.
However, those at Old Trafford will also need to deal with the six different players who have their contract expiring at the end of the season.
Six Man Utd players with expiring contracts
Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo all have their contracts at United expiring in June 2025.
According to Transfermarkt, United only have the option to extend Amad and Maguire’s for a further year to avoid clubs coming in to convince them of a move.
Otherwise, Heaton, Evans, Lindelöf and Eriksen could also hypothetically agree terms for an end-of-season exit next month.
That seems unlikely for Heaton and Evans, who are both more likely to retire at the end of the season. But for the other two, there will probably be a couple of attractive offers from clubs in Europe.
Amad and Maguire are also unlikely to have their current terms extended by United because they are both in negotiations for completely new contracts.
Reports suggested that Amad would sign a new deal before the January window opens, although nothing has been announced as things stand.
United should keep Amad and Maguire
There is one completely obvious and simple decision from all of this – do not let Amad leave on a free transfer.
The Ivorian has been one of the club’s best players this season and fortunately wants to stay at Old Trafford as well and a new deal is a matter of time.
It is also important to note that with the likely departures of Lindelöf and Evans in the summer, United should be looking to keep Maguire on their books.
The English defender will likely receive interest in January, with clubs like Napoli reportedly interested in his services.

But the Reds should try and secure him a new contract on lower wages to avoid needing to splurge the cash on several defenders in coming transfer windows.
Amorim’s system requires more depth in the backline than usual but there are also several more important positions and roles to be paying attention to in upcoming windows.
