One European giant has already made a decision on Bruno Fernandes’ potential signing from Manchester United ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window.
Bruno Fernandes rejected a giant contract from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in the summer of 2025, saying no to the chance to play alongside Portugal teammates Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo.
The United captain has consistently set a standard of excellence since his arrival in 2020 and this continued through Amorim’s time as manager despite many poor team performances.
The Portuguese midfielder has impressed more than any other player under Amorim at United, and he has been cementing his place in the middle of Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.
His value at United is undeniable, consistently being a creative machine for years in Manchester.
Bayern Munich do not want to sign Fernandes from United
The reigning German Champions, Bayern Munich, took interest in United’s No. 8 after an impressive output for United last season, totalling 19 goals and 18 assists in United’s worst season.
Fabrizio Romano stated that Fernandes will consider his future at the end of the current campaign, but the player had no intention of moving to Saudi Arabia.
It has been previously stressed across British media that if Fernandes were to leave, it would be for a major European league.
Bayern have experience in buying from the Premier League with the likes of Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise all performing at their best in Bayern colours.
Still, according to German transfer specialist Christian Falk, they are walking away from the potential signing of Fernandes.
Why have Bayern lost interest?
The primary reason is reportedly the money side of the deal. Estimates of a fee have ranged between £40 million and £70 million, but that’s not the real problem in this case.
Fernandes is currently on a majorly high salary of over £300,000-a-week at United, and this is deemed to be too steep for the German giants.
It is reported that Bayern, like Man United, are looking to slash their wage bill for the future rather than increase it.
It is also an issue that Fernandes would be in heavy competition in his ideal role at Bayern, with him competing with the German star, Jamal Musiala at Bayern.
Both players occupy the No. 10 position at their strongest, and Bayern do not see Fernandes as a deep-relying central midfielder. As of right now, Bayern have been happy with Serge Gnabry filling in whilst Musiala recovers from injury.
However, this confuses Bayern’s links to Florian Wirtz last summer, who performed exceptionally as a creative playmaker for Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Fernandes remains in United’s books for now, but his future at Old Trafford is up in the air amid the possibility of selling a high-value asset to reinvest in the squad long-term.
